Choking is frightening—but a calm approach matters. This guide explains what to look for, what you can do safely, and when to get urgent veterinary help.
Signs your pet may be choking
Pawing at the mouth, gagging, retching
Noisy breathing or struggling to inhale
Blue/grey gums or tongue (urgent)
What to do
If your pet can breathe and cough, keep them calm and go to a vet.
If they can’t breathe, call an emergency vet immediately.
Only look in the mouth if it’s safe and you can clearly see an object—never push it deeper.
